As an event organizer, I am particularly curious and interested in the different online ticketing/ registration system out there.
As I also receive Startup Digest for 5 international cities (New York, Silicon Valley, Paris, Shanghai and Beijing) I thought I will do a quick study and observe what are the most popular registration tools used by tech events.
Evenbrite win largely, being used by 51% of the events.
Then come Meetup used by 20% of the event. I never used Meetup before but heard about the tool. Probably because it is blocked here in China. Why Meetup is blocked and not Evenbrite? The legend says people started using Meetup to organize gathering on Tiananmen or to protest about tiber or something. Anyway, as far as I recall it has been blocked since at least 2008.
Then come "own registration system" – usually just a web form.
Amiando – for big scale events.
Facebook – popular for events in France.
Weibo (Chinese Twitter with Event page) – popular in Shanghai event.
Beyond the study of tool, I realized the huge gap between the Tech community in NY (26 events featured in 1 Digest) and everywhere else!
Silicon Valley: 14 events
Paris: 9
Shanghai: 5
Beijing: 4
To be noted, most events in NY are organized by only 2 groups: NYCU and General assembly. Good job guys!
